American Values
How have American values (like freedom, equality, or community) changed in your lifetime?
I’ve watched American values evolve in many ways since I was growing up. In my youth, there was a strong sense of patriotism, faith in institutions, and belief in the “American Dream”—that if you worked hard, you could succeed. Over time, I’ve seen society become more open-minded and inclusive, with greater emphasis on equality for women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. Freedom has taken on a broader meaning, not just political freedom but also personal choice and self-expression. While we’ve made progress in many areas, I sometimes feel that our sense of community has weakened, as people have become more individualistic and divided. Still, I’m proud of how much we’ve grown as a nation in recognizing the rights and dignity of all people.
